Sunday drivel

July 2, 2006 - 08:44 PM

[No spell check, grammar check, or sense check. You've ben warned! - Ed.]

A longish day today, starting with getting up way earlier than my body wanted - especially having gone to bed at midnight, which for me these days is like 3am used to be when I was in college. (Now I know why my parents go to bed at 9 and get up at six.)

We went out for our (first) traditional Sunday morning picnic in the park. So-so bagel with so-so cream cheese. I'll have to plan better for next time. Huevos rancheros accompanied by a small filet mignon, maybe. I just have to figure out how to keep the asparagus and béarnaise sauce warm.

Had a quick conference call for work... nothing to do except verify the processes I started last night finished, and show my virtual self to get some face time with management. ("Face time" is an evil idea created by management to give what they think is a good reason to not promote someone.)

Went to church. Today was our fast and testimony meeting, which means that people generally fast for a couple of meals, and there are no pre-arranged talks or sermons given. The mic is open for anyone from the congregation who would like to stand and share their faith. Not something I normally do, but I thought "use it or lose it" so I decided to stand up and give it a go. As I had thought, my four-year-old (well, almost four) wouldn't be content to sit with his friends but had to go up to the front and help me. I fumbled through a few thought while he was grabbing for the microphone and trying to blab into it. Then, just as I paused between incoherent thoughts, he leans forward and almost shouts into the mic: "I'M DOING OOOOOKAAAAAYYYYYYY!!"

The truly odd part is that, after talking to the entire congregation without being asked to (from a stage no less), clammed up on being asked to give the opening prayer in his four-year-old Sunday school class. Go figure.

As a point of information, the bolts holding down the passenger seat of a 2000 Maxima take a 14mm socket. Why do I know this? Well, we had a relaxing afternoon of doing nothing, mostly, except taking the interior of the car apart to hoover up the spilled chocolate milk (a remnant from the picnic - I thought it would be fine, but the pop-off top popped off in the heat during church, and when I turned a corner, it spilled a good four ounces of already-warm milk down between the chair and center console. !@#$%^&*)

Cleaning the carpet consisted of (1) removing the passenger seat, (2) getting rid of two pounds of garbage and six pounds of toys from the floor, (3) wet-dry-vac-ing the milk, and (4) repeatedly pouring a couple cups of water on the rug to rinse it then vacuum the half-milky water back up.

After dinner and Kid Bath, we had the good fortune of a quick thunderstorm... this always calms down our boy, who otherwise has his engine revving until he falls asleep. He was out in about five minutes.

I can do better than that tonight I think.

Have a great week.
